Discomfort happens and it’s ok

Sometimes in yoga class, discomfort shows up in unexpected ways. It’s not just the stretch of a tight hamstring or the wobble of tired arms. Sometimes it’s fidgeting with your hair, scratching your skin, adjusting your clothes... little ways our mind says, “I feel uncomfortable here.”

I noticed it the other day in a student—hands busy, thoughts restless. And I recognised it, because I’ve felt it too. When we’re in a pose that feels intense, sometimes the body tenses but the mind runs even faster. “I don’t like this.” “I’m not good at this.” “What’s wrong with me?”

But this is where yoga really begins. Not in avoiding the discomfort, but gently noticing it. Watching the thoughts spin their stories, and giving them a little less power.

The magic happens not when the discomfort disappears, but when you see it for what it is: a passing moment, a habit of the mind, a visitor who doesn’t need to stay.

So next time discomfort shows up, instead of running from it, pause.Notice.Breathe.

The less you resist it, the less control it has over you. And that’s the quiet power of yoga. 🌿
